Trudeau Handicap Hotlaps Results

Postby Jane Fossett » Mon Dec 03, 2007 7:01 am

I'm tracking the Handicap Hotlaps results here, and I'll try to post the current list every day or so in this box.
For reference, here's JT's comment from ten months ago:
On February 20 2007, Jacqueline Trudeau wrote:... The Defender II and Trucordia should be very evenly matched provided all sails are flying on both. That is probably evident from the racing done so far.
If those boats rate as a 1.0, the other boats in the Trudeau line are scripted to perform at these baselines:

Bluewater - .8
Tahiti Ketch - .75
Trudeau 32 - .7
Sea Sharp - .65
...

On the attached spreadsheet most abbreviations are self-explanatory. A few may not be:
SS= Trudeau Sea Sharp
T12b= Tetra35 v1.2 beta
32= Trudeau 32

Summarising my results I get:
ACA32 Average 05:46.5 = 346.5 secs Relative 0.82 weight = 1.22
Larinda Average 06:39 = 399 secs Relative 0.94 weight =1.06
Yawl Average 07:01.5 = 421.5 Relative 1.0 weight = 1.0
Which suggests that my ACA32 and Larinda times were poor - I should have 05:17 and 05:52 respectively based on Jane's calculations so far)

Grin.
Actually, as the chart shows, the real problem is your Yawl times are too good! I think we just need more data to get a normal distribution of scores. Once we have enough data, it might be interesting to compare the relative weights of the boats for each skipper. My guess is that approach would have much less variability. We'll see!

M1sha Dallin wrote:BOAT: Defender Heavy
Can't get the jib to Tack via a chat command though. ...
...the Defender [is] slightly slower than the Yawl for me.

"/1 gybe" should flip all the sails... (but don't get me started complaining about 'SL gesture failures').
The Defender is a bit slower for me as well, but for a practical reason: The Defender has a huge main boom compaired to the yawl. When you get close to a mark, an obstruction, or another boat, you need to adjust the Defender's course or change the timing of your gybe to avoid a collision. This is true in the Yawl also, but to a smaller degree...
(in my humble opinion, anyway!)

I decrypted all the acronyms, except one, what's the SS?

and where's the tetra35 with its (estimated) relative weight of 0.15? XD

Results in Hot Laps are similar to fleet races...

Postby Jane Fossett » Tue Dec 04, 2007 11:38 am

Just out of curiosity, I went back and looked at a few week's Big-Boat Race results
to see how the lap times compared to the hotlaps.
Of course, for many reasons it's not a good comparison.
One obvious reason is that the wind for Big-Boat fleet racing has built-in variation.
However, it looks like the variation is relatively small and evens out over the race,
since the results look pretty similar.

For example: Nearly every week Berjo Saiman races his "full" Trucordia Yawl on Sunday nights.
I looked at his last seven 'typical' laps when racing NYC B-1A.
Berjo's average net lap time was 7:58 (SD= 0:14).
That seems quite close to the zero variance hot laps scores for the Yawl posted in this thread.

I also looked at eight typical Larinda Schooner (Lite) Big-Boat lap times (from four different skippers).
The average net lap time was 7:08 (SD= 0:19).
Again, that's in pretty good agreement with the individual hot lap scores listed here.

Just to give you all fair warning. The next boat - due out sometime in early 2008 - is going to be a monster before the wind. beating to windward? not so much. 8) is it possible to configure the windsetter for "trade winds"? ;)

Thanks to Hpathe and Manul for adding the Friendship and 32 to the Hotlaps Handicap list!
I added the times to the spreadsheet posted above. If you look at those numbers, Hpathe's single lap time is 72% as fast as the average Trucordia Yawl time. That seems in good agreement with Jacqueline Trudeau's prediction that the Trudeau 32 should be 70% as fast as the Yawl/ Defender.
